Wellington Recovery Visit

Home > ESBPS

This was a report of the Preservation Society's visit to Wellington Number 2 signal box in January 2003 to recover lever frame equipment. The report appeared in the Society magazine in the spring of that year.

Sunday 26th January [2003] brought several supporters of the project to Wellington (Salop) Number 2 Signal Box, in order to recover fittings from the abolished signal box (taken over by Madley Junction in December 2002).
It was soon decided that the levers were not worth using, as they were bare, no catch handles or anything, all the components having been taken by the contractor for strategic spares. Instead we concentrated on interlocking parts. We managed to recover about half a dozen locking trays, eight circuit controller connections, about a dozen cams, a dozen or so signal wire slings and several million nuts and bolts! All of which will be enormously helpful to the rebuilding process.

The visit was all organised in a great rush in about two days, as time was short, so thanks to all the supporters who helped at short notice. Thank you: Peter Jordan, Peter Binnersley and Bob Davies, ('The Exeter West-ers'!); And to Dave Nicholson and Derek Owen for allowing us to retreive these components. Also, big thanks to my local Venture Scout Leader, Marcus Brind, who drove all the way from Newbury (Berkshire) up to Wellington and back to collect the parts. Thanks all!

I try to keep my ear to the ground (or the omnibus) as much as I can, and I have my eye on a few boxes with limited days, but if anyone hears of any other boxes to close, please do let me know.
